Perch is one of the nicest fish to catch on a fly rod and its hunting looks very similar to the American Large/small mouth bass. perch fight very well even better than most other fresh water species of the same size. Effective flyfishing for perch is another question. Because of the fact that most perch hunts in schools it is much easier to catch a small one than one as big as on the picture ( 20 "). These fish live more solitaire than the small ones. Though you can fish them from a floating boat very effective by using a shooting head type of flyline (sinking or intermediate) and a jigging kind of fly like a dognobler or a goldbead headed marabou streamer. All you have to do is wait for surfacing perch or small bait fish and cast the fly on the back end of the hunting school. Mostly one or a few strips of the flyline is enough to get a hit. These fish are most of the time the biggest in the school because of the easy way they can catch the bigger and hurt bait fish which are left alone by the school. Flyrods used are in the AFTMA 4/5 range.
