Pike (Essox Lucius)
(Northern pike)
Pike a first class predator which is capable of hunting and
eating prey as large or even larger than its own length The way a pike hunts is very
aggressive .It's food contains Baitfish, Frogs, Ducklings, to even Muskrats. A pike is a good sport fish for Flyfisherman,
which at the same time is
not to difficult to catch. A big streamer fished on a floating line will bring enough
pike's to the net.
| Flyfishing for pike is done with aftma 6 to 8 rods in
combination with a floating flyline On some occasions a sinker is used (deep water) In Holland we fish mostly with bulky fly's on 0/2 or 0/4 hooks some prefer even bigger. |

Pike can grow to over 4 ft in length and a weight of max. 50 pounds. Pike can be found
in almost al kinds of water from rivers to big lakes and even brackish water (Sweden).Pike
are from nature lazy fish and lay in ambush to wait for a meal. But when prey is scares
they hunt as well. Pike's spawn in early spring when the water temperature have reached
2-12 c. The female Pike accompanied by 1 or more male's deposits her eggs in weed or on
reed stems. The female lay's approximately 15000 - 20000 eggs /kg body weight. Large
female's even can lay over more than 1 million eggs.
