The roach is one of Holland's major fish to catch on a flyrod caught on a light flyrod AFTMA 2-3 they give nice sport. They can be caught on almost every nymph or dryfly. Roach can reach a length of +/- 10 inch or 35 cm and a weight of about 2 pound. Roach can be found in almost every kind of water from rivers to lakes were he feeds on aquatic insect and insect larva. Roach spawns in April - June when water temperature reaches the 10 C mark. During spawning roach does not feed and is difficult to catch. Female fish can lay between 5000 - 200000 eggs. These eggs will hatch after 4 to 10 days.

Fly fishers can catch this fish in spring in shallow waters were the temperature rises quick under sunny conditions for instance in a side arm of a river. During winter time they can be found in deep water or the deepest parts of a particular water.
