The rudd is one of Hollands most beautiful fish and really fun to catch on a flyrod caught on a light flyrod AFTMA 2-3 they give nice sport. They can be caught on almost every nymph or dryfly. Rudd can reach a length of +/- 14 inch or 37 cm and a weight of about 3 pound. Rudd can be found in water which have plenty of weed growth were he feeds himself with aquatic insect and insect larva. Rudd spawns in April - June when water temperature reaches the 10 C mark. During spawning Rudd does not feed and is difficult to catch. Female fish can lay between 5000 - 200000 eggs. These eggs will hatch after 4 to 10 days. During spawning many hybrid's are formed such as Roach-Rudd, Rudd-Roach, Bream-Roach. These Hybrid's are born sterile. The rudd's behaviour is almost the same as that from a roach. Except for some small things. The Rudd swims higher than a Roach and will take more food of the surface of the water or just beneath it in comparison with the Roach.

Fly fishers can catch this fish in spring in shallow waters were the temperature rises quick under sunny conditions for instance in a side arm of a river. During winter time they can be found in deep water or the deepest parts of a particular water.
