Rainbow and Brown trout
As we don't have nice streams in Holland, we have the opportunity to fish on trout
on some reservoirs from which the nicest one is the OOSTVOORNSE MEER.
This brackish water lake of approximately 233 acres is laying near the mouth of the new
waterway ( Port of Rotterdam ) and is stocked with 1000 Kg of Rainbow trout each year. The
growth of these fish is enormous due to the fact that the lake is filled with plenty of
bait such as sticklebacks, and scrimp. Stock size of these fish is around 8" at this
stage the fish is only 2 years old. After the 1st year in the lake the fish has
grown to a size of 20" and 1 year later they have grown to a respectable 26" and
another year later they are 30".
What to think about this fish 29"
The lake is at its deepest 43 meters but the average is 21 meters. Most fishing takes
place at the shallows (1 to 2 meters). The hen fish looks the nicest with there silvery
colour and are mostly the strongest and biggest fish and look very similar to a Stealhead.
The cock fish however are almost red and are species at there own. All fish have to be
returned to the water because it is a catch and release water.
Most Flyfisherman use 9 foot rods from #5 to #7 and intermediate and fast sinking Flylines and as a fly a Streamer or a Nymph . By some occasions the floating line with Dry fly or Nymph will take some nice fish to shore. Because of the intense fishing during the most time of the year it is not easy for inexperienced anglers to catch fish.
